Advanced Placement Program

Thank you for your desire to learn more about our Advanced Placement program at WHCS. The questions and answers listed below should give you a good overview of the program.

What exactly is WHCS’ Advanced Placement program?

AP refers to high school classes that allow our students to earn honors or even college credit by taking rigorous and demanding classes through Florida Virtual School (FLVS).

What kinds of classes are offered?

You can see a list of AP classes by clicking here. You should bear in mind that these classes are designed to be as rigorous as a college class; therefore you want to make sure you are prepared to work hard and go beyond what is typically expected in high school.

What sort of credit may I receive for taking an AP class?

AP classes are taking during our elective periods and therefore count toward our high school elective requirements. Since AP classes are higher level classes, there is an added bonus of receiving additional points toward your grade point average, which will bolster your overall GPA and will make your transcript more attractive to colleges across the country.

Moreover, AP classes may also count for college credit. If this appeals to you, you must take the class and then take the AP exam that is offered at the end of the school year. If you receive a high enough score on the AP exam, you will earn college credit for the class.

Who is eligible for AP classes?

In order to take AP classes, you must:
  • Be a high school junior or senior.
  • Be available during 7th and/or 8th periods (or after school if you need to take an AP class at home)
  • Have a GPA of 3.0 or above.
  • Have a history of strong work habits in your previous classes.

Where will the  AP class be held?

You can take the class right here on campus in a Virtual Learning Lab environment where a moderator will be present. Alternatively, you can take the class at home.

What is the procedure for signing up for an AP class?

1.) First meet with Mrs. Zappone to determine whether or not you qualify. Call or stop by my office to set up an appointment.

2.) If you qualify, you will need to register on the Florida Virtual School website and make your course selection. To register, click here.

3.) FLVS will contact us to verify your enrollment for the AP class.

4.) Once we have verified your enrollment, you must wait for your FLVS instructor to contact you. He or she will give you instructions on how to begin your class.

5.) When your class is finished, FLVS will notify WHCS of your grade. We will put this on your transcript. If you want to be eligible to receive college credit for the course, you must take the AP exam in May. You can learn more about the AP exam by clicking here
