College can be expensive, but there are many scholarships available that may help reduce your cost. Below you will find links to various scholarships. Many can be applied for online. Local Scholarships

Johnson Scholarship Foundation is offering 2 scholarship opportunities.  1)Children of UPS employees or retirees who live in Florida.  Call 507-931-1682 for more details.  Deadline is April 15th.
2)Students with disabilities who attend/will attend one of the 11 state universities.  Deadline is May 15.

Abbott & Fenner Scholarship Program - to apply, go to www.abbottandfenner.com/scholarships.htm to submit an essay on the topic that appears on the web page.  Deadline is June 14, 2013 for the chance to be awarded up to $1,000!

Brookridge Woman's Club - This scholarship is based on an essay, your GPA, all clubs, sports and projects involved in, and 2 letters of recommendation.  The application is available in my office & is due by March 11, 2013! 

Business & Professional Women, Hernando County - $1,000 scholarships are available to 3 women from this county who plan to pursue their education.  Call Nicole Bixler at 352-200-0220 for further details.  Go to www.bpwhernando.org to apply by the March 15, 2013 deadline!

SunTrust Off to College Scholarship Sweepstakes - NOT based on GPA or financial need, this is free to enter & gives you 15 chances to win $1,000!  Enter online at www.offtocollege.info beginning September 14, 2012.  One winner will be chosen every 2 weeks from October 2012 to May 2012.  This is open to high school seniors & current undergraduate college students.  Only 1 entry per person, but you may register after each completed drawing for the next scheduled drawing.  This is a "no brainer!"

Tampa Bay Times Fund - This scholarship awards $15,000 per year for 4 years!  They look for high school seniors who are strong academically who have overcome obstacles in life & who want to attend their "dream school" out of state.  Application deadline is OCTOBER 15, 2013.  Go to www.tampabay.com/scholarships or call Nancy Waclawek at 727-893-8780 for more details.

Tampa Bay Times Fund "Career Journalism Scholarship"-This scholarship is for high school seniors who plan to study journalism/mass communication in college.  It is worth $2,500 per year & is renewable annually.  Application deadline is JANUARY 5, 2013.  Go to www.tampabay.com/scholarships or call Nancy Waclawek at 727-893-8780 for more details.

Timbertones Community Chorus of Timer Pines Scholarship - This scholarship awards $1,000 to a student enrolled in vocal music classes or is participating in high school vocal music activities. Applicants must have at least a 2.8 GPA  and must provide a letter of recommendation from a music teacher. The winner must use the scholarship to further his or her musical education. The winner(s) will be asked to perform at the Timbertones' spring concernt. For more information, please contact Charles Burnim at cburnim@suffolk.edu. Deadline is February 22!

Glen Lakes Garden Club - A $1000 horticulture scholarship is available.  To be eligible, you must have a 3.0 GPA, show financial need, and plan  to major in a field of agriculture, horticulture landscape design, etc. in college. Stage West Community Playhouse  - Stage West will awared $6,000 in scholarships to students who intend to study voice or theater arts. Applications are available at the Stage West box office on Forest Oaks Blvd. The box office is open from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. All applications are due by April 5th. Call the box office at (352) 683-5113 or Linda Campo at 352-428-4990 for more information.

Hernando County Bar Association - Two scholarships for $1,000 each will be offered to students who are Hernando County residents, who are attending or will be attending Pasco-Hernando Community College, and who are interested in law or a law-related career. Students must have a 3.0 or higher GPA in both the college and high school level. The scholarship deadline is March 23rd. The Hernando Jazz Society - Three scholarships of $500 each will be awarded for the private study of instrument or voice. All Hernando County students in grades 9 through 12 may apply by March 29th. Students must submit a completed application along with a recording and a letter of reference for pre-audition screening. The Nature Coast Tennis Foundation - Two $500 scholarships will be awarded. All high school students may apply, but one scholarship is specific to a high school tennis player. The applicaiton deadline is April 1st. For details, email nctf@tampabay.rr.com

Hernando County Sheriff's Office Scholarship - Two types of $1,000 scholarships are being offered to local graduating seniors. In all, the Hernando County Sheriff's Office Youth Education Services, Inc. is offering a total of three scholarships.The Richard Buckingham Community Service Scholarship will be awarded to two local students who have volunteered a considerable number of hours with an organization in Hernando, achieved at least a 2.0 grade point average and made plans to enroll as a full time student in an accredited college, university or trade school. The "In Honor of Richard B. Nugent" Community Service Scholarship will be awarded to a single student who has fulfilled the same criteria. The only difference is his or her post-high school education must center on public service – such as law enforcement, teaching or emergency services. The deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, March 30. All applications must be received by the sheriff's office at 18900 Cortez Blvd. by that date.

Veteran's Foreign Wars Post 9236 - The VFW has a couple of different scholarships available to students in Hernando County. Call the post at (352) 596-9236 for more information.

Brooksville Women's Club Scholarship - Please contact the Woman's Club at (352) 597-3969 for more information. 

Withlacoochee River Electric - If you are a high school senior with a GPA of 2.0 or higher and live in the service area of Withlacoochee River Electric, you may qualify for a scholarship through WREC. Click here for more information.

Hernando-Citrus Farm Bureau - This scholarship awards $1,000 to a deserving individual in Hernando or Citrus Counties. Applicants should have some involvement in a type of agricultural youth group. Please contact the bureau at 352-595-6154 or email them at ahrens_f@hcsb.k12.fl.us.


Athletic Scholarships

BigSun Scholarship - The "BigSun Organization" is offering young athletes a scholarship in the amount of $500.  The deadline to apply is June 21, 2013.  To apply, go to www.bigsunathletics.com

Bright House Sports Network's David Logan Scholarship - This scholarship is granted to promote athletics and academics. To apply, you must have at least a 3.5 grade point average, have participated in athletics, and have attended a high school within the Bright House Sports Network. The scholarship involved writing an essay of 500 words or less explaining why you believe you deserve the scholarship. Applications may be downloaded by clicking here.

Wendy's Heisman Scholarship - To qualify for eligibility, you must have a GPA of 3.0, be involved in at least one school sponsored sport, and be a leader and role model in your community and school. This one is well-worth applying for, as everyone who applies receives something - from special certificates, Wendy's gift cards, scholarship money, and more. Character Based Scholarships

Horatio Alger Scholarship - This scholarship seeks to assist students who have demonstrated integrity, perseverance in overcoming adversity, strength of character, financial need, a good academic record, commitment to pursue a college education, and a desire to contribute to society. You must be a high school senior, have a critical financial need of $50,000 or lower adjusted gross income per family, a minimum GPA of 2.0, be a U.S. citizen, and be involved in community service activities. Lombardi Scholarship and Stamps Scholar Program - Both of these scholarships are geared toward students who exemplify a commitment to excellence, community service, and public responsibility. These scholarships are open to seniors who are ranked at the top of their class and demonstrate significant academic achievement through course work, writing or research. Journalism Scholarships

St. Pete Times Career Journalism Scholarship - This scholarship is for seniors looking to begin a career in journalism. You could receive up to $2,500 per year to help you pay for your undergraduate studies. The application deadline is January 5 (postmarked). Art, Music and Drama Scholarships


Alliance for Young Artists and Writers - This scholarship is open to students in middle and high school. It recognizes students who excel in the visual arts and/or creative writing. To apply, use this link: http://www.axa-equitable.com/axa-foundation/AXA-achievement-scholarship.html

Arts for Life Scholarship - This scholarship is for seniors graduating from a Florida high school. Applicants must demonstrate artistic excellence in creative writing, dance, drama, music, or visual art. To apply, click here.

Engineering Scholarships

AES Engineers - This scholarship awards $500 to one winner each year. The deadline is October 5, 2012. To apply, students must submit an essay on one of the two topics that appear on the scholarship page of the following website: www.aesengineers.com/scholarships.htm

Scholarships for Minorities

National Achievement Scholarship Program - This scholarship is for outstanding Black American high school students. There is quite a bit of detail in this program, so if you are interested in applying, please drop by my office and we will go through the information booklet together.

Miscellaneous Scholarships

Best Buy - This is for students in grades 9-12 who demonstrate good grades, commitment to community service and/or have work experience.  Apply at www.pr.bby.com by February 15, 2014.

NFIB Young Entrepreneur Award - Graduating high school seniors who operate their own small business are eligible to receive a 2013 NIFB Young Entrepreneur Award from the NFIB Young Entrepreneur Foundation.  Visit www.NFIB.com/YEA to apply on-line between October 1, 2013 and December 17, 2012.

AXA Achievement Scholarship - $670,000 in scholarship money awarded!!  10 $25,000 national winners & 42 $10,000 state winners each year.  Are you active in your community?  Have you led or initiated a project that benefits others?  Have you overcome personal challenges or difficulties?  If you answer "YES" to any of these questions, then you may already be an AXA Achiever! Go to www.axa-achievement.com to apply by December 1, 2013!  Also, apply by February 1, 2014 for the AXA Achievement Community Scholarship for the opportunity to be awarded $2,000!

Abbott and Fenner Scholarship Program -  This scholarship will award up to $1,000 to the winner(s) each year. Application deadline is usually in June. Check their website for a specific date. Gen and Kelly Tanabe Scholarship - Applicants must be 9th through 12th grade high school students. Students must be prepared to give a short personal statement. This scholarship awards $1,000 to the winner. To apply, please go to http://www.gkscholarship.com/ by July 31.

College JumpStart Scholarship - Applicants must be in the 10th, 11th, or 12th grade. Three scholarships are available for up to $1,500. To apply, go to http://www.jumpstart-scholarship.net/ by April 15.

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards - This ia a unique opportunity for those of you that have exceptional volunteer service in your community!  This scholarship awards amounts from $1000 to $5000.

Youth Volunteer Scholarship Award - Applicants must have a GPA of at least 3.5 & a minimum of 50 volunteer hours within the past 2 years.  Apply at www.studentscholarships.org/volunteer.php by November 29, 2013.

Odenza Marketing Group Volunteer Scholarship - Applicants must have a GPA of at least 2.5 in their LAST academic year & a minimum of 50 volunteer hours within the past 12 months.  Apply at www.studentscholarships.org/college.php by December 30, 2013.

Maple Leaf Dentistry Scholarship - Applicants must have at lease a 3.0 GPA in their LAST academic year & 100 hours of volunteer service over the last 2 years.  Apply at www.peterboroughdentists.com by May 30,2014.
